The current system of having the Assistant Principal find substitute bus drivers was counter productive. I initiated a new system for drivers to find their own substitute drivers.

I learned how to think "outside the box" on numerous occasions for the betterment of our school and students. For example helping to rearrange custodial duties to deal with reoccurring building and facility problems.
Customer Focus – Understands the students as customers of the work of schooling and the servant nature of leadership and acts accordingly.
Daily, I would engage in the same routine of checking voicemails, answering emails, all in a timely manner.
Delegation – Effectively assigns work tasks to others in ways that provide learning experiences for them and in ways that ensure the efficient operation of the school.

Teachers, students, and parents were surveyed to allow all stakeholders a voice in our school community. Surveys encompassed the perceived school culture and community involvement in our school.
Emotional Intelligence – Is able to manage oneself through self awareness and self management and is able to manage relationships through empathy, social awareness and relationship management. This competency is critical to building strong, transparent, trusting relationships throughout the school community.
In dealing with difficult situations, I learned how to navigate such waters by knowing how to engage in crucial conversations.
Environmental Awareness – Becomes aware and remains informed of external and internal trends, interests and issues with potential impacts on school policies, practices, procedures and positions.
Understanding my school's culture and climate, I became aware of the many factors of influence which our school was apart of on a daily basis.
Global Perspective – Understands the competitive nature of the new global economy and is clear about the knowledge and skills students will need to be successful in this economy.
Helped students become aware that the jobs which they will have one day, many of which have not even been created. It is essential students gain skills which will be needed in the ever changing global economy.
Judgment – Effectively reaching logical conclusions and making high quality decisions based on available information. Giving priority and caution to significant issues. Analyzing and interpreting complex information.
I learned that when dealing with student discipline it is imperative to get all of the facts before handing out any form of consequences student, as such consequences could be life altering for that student.
Organizational Ability – Effectively plans and schedules one’s own and the work of others so that resources are used appropriately, such as scheduling the flow of activities and establishing procedures to monitor projects.
Failure to plan is planning to fail! I learned you must be highly organized to be an effective school leader.

The principal of a school is a community leader and you must be aware that people are always observing you and watching you to see how you will react in certain situations.

I learned how to be accountable to all stakeholders by returning calls in a timely manner and handling student discipline/issues with expediency.

By being organized, I was able to effectively respond to all requests such as email, voicemail, and discipline referrals.

Being in charge of mass communication for our staff in regard to PLC folders, PDP due dates, and announcements allowed me to create an efficient system of thinking. (See Element IVa)

Technology was used on a daily basis in order to meet goals, requirements, and grow as a life long learner.

I found it was essential that using a desk calendar/planner on a daily basis helped me stay on track with appointments and tasks.

Moving forward I have developed my own vision of what it means to be a highly effective school leader. This includes setting a firm foundation during the first 2 weeks of school where expectations are created and understood by all stakeholders.
